It’s been almost a month since I chopped my hair, and I’ve been absolutely loving it! It feels so much lighter and easier to maintain. Not to mention, it’s much more flattering. My long hair was doing nothing for me, probably because I was doing nothing for my hair (I’ll spend hours on an outfit but am incredibly lazy when it comes to hairstyles). Luckily, short hair is a lot easier to pull off with minimal effort.

This is the longest I’ve ever gone without making a drastic change to my hair… and the longest my hair had ever been (I chopped off about 11 inches). The last time I cut it was the first week I lived in Scotland for study abroad, which is also the only time I’ve ever dyed it. And when I cut it before that, it was right before I moved to Denver for college. I have a habit of letting it grow and then chopping it all off the second it gets long—without telling anyone beforehand. What a thrill! But for the last couple of years I’ve just been getting it trimmed and keeping it long.

I was going to cut it off back in February, but I chickened out last minute—so unlike me! I’ve never been the type of person to feel attached to my hair (it’ll grow back, after all) but for some reason I was feeling weirdly uncomfortable with letting go.

Thank goodness I finally nipped that in the bud. My last couple of haircut experiences were unpleasant—either due to a bad cut or a rude stylist—so this time my boyfriend convinced me to see his hair lady. He has very curly hair that takes a lot to maintain and a skilled stylist to properly cut. She turned out to be just what I needed. She was non-judgmental, listened to my desire to bring out my natural texture, and even gave me some curl cream to experiment with my fine hair. The light layers she added are perfect for a fun, flippy look and make it easy to change my part, which I often do.

And how cute is this outfit?? Nothing makes you feel more confident than a good ‘fit with a fresh cut. I’ve had both this floral top and the denim skirt for years but had never thought to put them together before. They make for such a summery pairing, complete with the maroon purse to bring out the flowers in the top.

It’s funny looking back on February now and thinking about how nervous I was to cut my hair. When I went to my appointment this time, I wasn’t nervous at all—and haven’t regretted the cut one bit. It was definitely the right decision! If you’ve been thinking about a big hair change… I say go for it.
Miles of smiles,
Grace
