Inspired by the 90s

I’m teaming up with a couple of other bloggers today to showcase outfits inspired by the years we were born—fun theme, right? I was born in November 1999 (almost a 2000s baby) so I just made the cutoff for all things 90s fashion, music, etc. But I decided to wear my 90s-inspired look to an 80s concert—the irony! I have to admit that I like things from the 80s a lot more than my own decade… I took my boyfriend to see Styx (one of his favorite bands) and Foreigner at Ball Arena downtown back in June. Both bands were fun to see live, but we were amazed at how good Styx still sounds. It was like listening to the radio!

When I think about the 90s, a lot of trends come to mind that I don’t particularly like (many of which have recently made a comeback)—slip dresses, bucket hats, low-rise jeans, thin eyebrows, frosted tips. There are also some that I feel less negatively about, such as chokers and scrunchies. It’s no surprise that I had a difficult time coming up with an outfit when I don’t generally like what fashion from this decade had to offer.

If I had to choose, I would say I most align with the grunge aesthetic, regarding both music and fashion. I think there’s a lot of bad music that came out of the decade but I can get down to some Nirvana and Soundgarden. Since I wasn’t about to throw on a flannel, combat boots, and fishnets in the middle of summer—and I didn’t want to put together an outfit that felt too costume-y—I had to get creative in capturing the essence of grunge without the layers.

After several iterations, I landed on this casual ensemble—a beaded crochet tank reminiscent of fishnets, baggy light wash denim shorts, and high-top sneakers. Of course I had to accessorize with a choker as well. The top was a hand-me-down from my mom’s cousin and came with a matching cardigan, which feels 90s-esque to me—and for all I know, could have actually come from the 90s. I’m not sure I love the white sneakers with the shorts, but they most fit the vibe. I do love the top paired with light wash jeans and these shoes, though, as seen in my Olivia Rodrigo concert outfits Reel! I just couldn’t bring myself to wear pants when I was walking to a concert in 100 degree weather…

Check out the lead singer of Foreigner! When they were playing Juke Box Hero, there was a really long drum solo, to the point where I was wondering when it would end… and next thing I knew the lead singer was dramatically being raised from the middle of the crowd on a very small pedestal, just in time to rock the refrain. Exciting!

We are showing that you can’t put a number on style!

So all-in-all, it’s not the most explicitly-90s outfit (not by a long shot) but I think I found something loosely inspired that works for my style. I wouldn’t even say it’s grungy, but that’s the aesthetic I was thinking about while coming up with an outfit for this prompt. How do you feel about fashion from the decade you were born? All the rage or leaves a little something to be desired? As always, thanks for stopping by the blog today.

Miles of smiles,
Grace

  1. Grace, you did an amazing job interpreting this theme! I would not have guessed that you struggled with it. What a cool tank top. It definitely has all the grungy vibes of the 90s. And I love the pairing with your light wash shorts and high top sneakers. Super cute look! And what an awesome concert to see. I wouldn’t mind going to a Styx concert!

  4. Great blouse! I used to have one like that too. Now I also like knitted clothes, they have their own charm.
